2011 US Chess Championship - GM-Elect Sam Shankland Vs GM Alexander Onischuk. Shankland opens with d4, and Onischuk answers with the Nimzo-Indian. After a tense struggle for control of the center, Shankland attempts to hold on to an extra, very weak pawn on c5. Onischuk is sufficiently distracted by this, and white is able to achieve and maintain a small but lasting positional advantage. Shankland boldly sacrifices a piece to achieve a favorable endgame where he has 2 pawns for a knight, which he is able to convert while playing on with seconds on his clock and using the 5 second increment to stay alive. A fantastic victory by Sam Shankland, and it will be very interesting to watch him play against Robert Hess in the semi-finals.

Robson played a relatively tame line in the Bg5 variation of the Najdorf Sicilian. Naroditsky reacted calmly and achieved a slight positional advantage. Robson got into time-trouble and committed a few decisive mistakes, most importantly misplacing his knight on the edge of the board with 24. na5. His king's position then came under a strong attack by the heavy pieces of Naroditsky, and he quickly entered a lost endgame down an exchange (rook for a minor piece - knight/bishop) and 2 pawns to boot. A nice game by Naroditsky as the two young prodigies faced off in the US Championship.
