China dominates the global production of rare earth metals—materials vital for manufacturing electronics. But the Chinese regime's restricted export policy has led to a dispute with the World Trade Organization. Here's that story.
August 24th saw the Chinese regime vow to appeal a World Trade Organization ruling against its raw materials export policy. The ruling was levied against the regime's restrictions on exports of rare earth metals. Those are industrial materials used in making everything from cell phones and TVs, to medicine.
In July, a WTO legal panel rejected a Chinese official's claim that they were limiting exports for environmental protection. The case was brought to the WTO in 2009 by the United States, the European Union, and Mexico on grounds that the limits were being used to drive up prices, not for environmental protection. The environmental protection claims were weakened because the regime did not put limits on domestic production and consumption.
The Chinese regime controls 97% of the world's supply of rare earth metals. But it has been steadily limiting their export. A 30-thousand-ton export limit was put in place earlier this year—up 35% from last year.
This has lead to major shortages of rare earth metals abroad, driving up prices. Europium, which produces the red color in televisions, sold for 720 U.S. dollars per kilogram at the start of 2011. It has since risen to 6,300 dollars per kilogram.
In the 1980s, China supplanted the U.S. as the largest supplier of rare earth metals. With the growing shortages, many countries are attempting to develop their own rare earth mining facilities.

A ruling by the World Trade Organization could change the face of international trading.
An appeal by the Chinese regime to revoke July's landmark ruling against its restrictions on exports of nine common industrial materials has been rejected.
The US, Europe, and Mexico accused the Chinese regime of driving up prices and giving an unfair advantage to Chinese manufacturers with several export duties and quotas.
But the regime appealed saying the measure was in place for environmental protection.
The ruling by the WTO could set an important precedent. China currently exports 90% of the world's rare earth metals -- important ingredients in many modern technologies.
Similar export quotas and duties exist on rare earth metals, which has also drawn criticism from the international community.
The Chinese regime is expected to comply with the WTO ruling.
The WTO gives China access to invaluable international markets that have driven much of China's recent economic growth in the past three years.

... all of this need to admit more and more economists. the "philosophy" by cheap wages, the export surplus at a high level to stabilize has led to falling incomes in Germany and capital flight.
Prof.Heiner Flassbeck has already said years earlier :
"We export good products very cheap (wage dumping) and receive bad papers!" (bonds)
This is confirmed in the meantime by numerous economists.
