OBJECTION YOU HONOR. My opposing council, Bill, is using factual data to undermine the apparent intelligence of my client. I ask that you dismiss this prejudicial evidence on the basis of Factual Inconvenience.
There is indeed such a thing as "hate speech"; it is a cultural construct. Most cultures, regardless of geographical dispersion, share some common beliefs, such as respect for others, and aversion towards hateful messages. The determinants of "hate" are cultural conventions. These conventions may vary from culture to culture. Nevertheless, as societies have progressed and become more diverse and pluralistic, sensitivity towards hatred has also increased. Indeed, what may have been completely acceptable 100 years ago, would be unacceptable today. So indeed, society itself is one of the best mechanisms for the censorship of vile and fateful content. This is achieved through the processes of shame, shunning and disengagement of the perpetrators.
