mvpjesuslovesu - more electronic dollars via QE = a lower price per dollar against other currencies, all other things being equal. Mind you that downward pressure is balanced to some extent by demand for the US $ as a safe haven. Nonetheless by itself QE weakens the dollar, just as the British eq...

miradvorak - maybe but it's a bad idea nonetheless. The inflation spike we are seeing is a direct cause and that's lowered consumer spending in terms of the volume of goods they can afford to buy for the same £1 they had a year ago. In turn that's widened our UK output gap. Grim stuff.

Ceasar19abm and TigerGrumman - thanks for the feedback! I agree that more people should understand some of the issues I talk about. Most (City) commentators make them more complicated than they actually need to be and that puts people off. Sadly, I've a way to go to catch Lady Gaga....:) Tim.

Nicosmind - no the two rates that have diverged to around 10 times their normal spread are the banks's 3month eurolibor rate and the US equivalent OIS rate. Meanwhile the gap between £ 3-month LIBOR and OIS is at a 3-year high. LIBOR is a "commercial" rate in so far as the ECB doesn't really infl...

apetrov08 - also bear in mind that by halving the premium for borrowing dollars to OIS+0.5% down from OIS+100% the Fed temporarily made it cheaper for European banks (via the ECB) to borrow dollars from it than even US banks! That's bizarre and shows how anxious the US has become about "fixing" E...

Has the Fed saved Europe? - MoneyWeek investment tutorial
Tim Bennett, deputy editor of MoneyWeek magazine, explains what the latest bold move by the US Federal Reserve means for Europe.

apetrov08 - the Fed is entitled (wrongly or rightly) to charge interest because it holds the world's reserve currency. As far as I know the ECB won't earn interest on any euro "deposits". As the biggest bully in the financial playground, the Fed gets to set the agenda here.

Hi Marcelo. Dividends are usually paid twice a year - an interim and final. the dates depend on the company. Earnings and dividends are different - dividends are paid out of earnings so maybe quite a bit lower. Yes a share buyback will boost EPS so keep an eye on announcements! Tim.

TomCarrollITV - just to clarify my last comment - the INCOME yield is now 6.3%. The total gross redemption yield would also factor in the £5 capital gain available between now and redemption. Tim.
-
TomCarrollITV - a fixed coupon of 6% means you always get £6 per £100 nominal value of bond no matter what the market price. So if the market price is £95 (per £100 nominal) you still get £6 of income. However the yield is now 6/95 as a percentage - so 6.3%.
