My first baseball memory is a very vivid and somber moment in baseball history for certain fans of a very famous team. That moment was the reaction of my father and his three brothers to the game-winning, 1960 World Series ending home run by the greatest fielding second baseman of all-time, Bill Mazeroski. I was to turn 5 years old in 3 months and I had just witnessed three large grown men collectively moan the words "Oh nooooooooo!" I had become a Yankee fan for better or worse at that very moment with no real say in the matter. The fourth brother was my uncle Mike, a Dodger fan who over the years had enjoyed reliving that joyous moment when the Pirates beat the oh so hated Yankees. By the time I was eight I was experiencing a sick feeling as Sandy Koufax was making the Yanks look sick in the 1963 World Series. Having Mickey Mantle as my first sports hero got me through. And my eighth grade teacher, Sister Mary Augusta, who claimed she was a distant cousin of Mickey Mantle, helped in my appreciation of baseball history by taking us on a six hour bus trip to the Hall of Fame in Cooperstown.
