Their idea to do our very own 12 Days of Christmas by releasing a Christmas Song each day ending on Christmas morning ended up creating my new favorite Christmas album of all time!! No Joke.
What makes this whole album so incredible to me is that both the music and the videos were recorded live in one take, and none of the musicians had chosen or rehearsed any of the songs before hand. Transforming our attic into a winter wonderland really seemed to bring out the magic of Christmas because all of the artists came up with these beautiful arrangements and spontaneous collaborations in such a short period of time, and then performed them all in such an authentically perfect way that your heart couldn't help but grow two sizes or more that evening.
I'm so proud to be working with such an amazingly talented group of artists. They all rose to the challenge of making One Take videos and definitely reminded me of everything I love about music. When you record something live like this you really can't hide or fix any of the mistakes, because all of the vocals and instruments end up getting recorded onto all of the tracks instead of each having their own, so if they turn their heads away from the mic, mess up on guitar, miss a note, you can't just "punch in" and fix it. You get what you get, and if it's bad you basically just have to scrap the track. We didn't scrap a single track from that night, and Kurt Hunter was able to set everything up to capture the music with a clarity that sounds like it was recorded in a pro studio.
I have a lot of fond memories from the past 2 and a half years of the SteamyintheCity Music Collective and I think this evening is going to a memory I think about often... even in the summer :)
