DDOT Bus Debacle - Aug 25, 2009 The Detroit Department Of Transportation held public meetings following the August 13 announcement by Mayor Bing that bus service would be eliminated on Sunday, cut back after 6pm Saturday, and eliminated from 2-5am. Imagine if you will a bus system that CLOSES Sat 6pm and reopens Mon 5am. The people of Detroit are UPSET. Many will loose their jobs, no weekend/evening classes, can't make visits to church, family, or festivals. Clear thought in considering these cuts must have been missing. Then to publicly announce them and begin action.... the city is revolting. Mass transit is a critical service to the people of Detroit and its suburbs. Through mass transit business operates *24 hours a day* - and truth be told the bus doesn't operate 24 hours a day in as many places as it could, or with the timing it should. Night travelers sitting on a corner for 45 minutes or more are targets for crime. Cut the buses, elongate waiting times and you'll see crime double, just as unemployment will double. It effects everyone - not just the impoverished and handicapped.
