About Me:

U.S. Military Officer's Oath of Office

I, ________________________, having been appointed a (grade) United States Air Force, do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office upon which I am about to enter, SO HELP ME GOD.

You have sworn to both uphold the Constitution and defend it against all enemies. You may have noticed that we said the Constitution, not the President or the Congress or the Department of Defense, but the Constitution and the principles it sets forth. In short, this is why you have sworn to support and defend a way of life, not doctrines or programs or political parties. Obviously, the difference between you and your civilian counterpart is the two words "and defend." Although both of you may support the Constitution, only you have sworn to defend it, and by defending it you defend our way of life in this country. Since the general civilization of mankind, I believe there are more instances of the abridgment of the freedom of the people by gradual and silent encroachments of those in power, than by violent and sudden usurpations; but, on a candid examination of history, we shall find that turbulence, violence, and abuse of power, by the majority trampling on the rights of the minority, have produced factions and commotions, which, in republics, have, more frequently than any other cause, produced despotism. If we go over the whole history of ancient and modern republics, we shall find their destruction to have generally resulted from those causes.
