In this episode we talk with Tom Johnson (@tomjohnson), who runs the blog, idratherbewriting.com. Tom is a technical communicator and has some thoughts about using visuals and videos as a technical writer. Dan Nunez makes another video, this time describing the clip board. An easy concept? Maybe, but great for all those who don't know. Brooks Andrus and Mike Kujansuu from TechSmith and introduce a new mobile app from TechSmith, Coaches Eye (www.coacheseye.com). Last, but not least, Shane Lovellette, Product Manager for Camtasia Studio gives us the screencast of the month.
Show Notes: 0:12 - Show Starts - intro and what's coming up on the show 0:37 - Show opening sequence 0:50 - Use #TSCForge on twitter or email us at theforge [at] techsmith.com 1:11 - Screenchamp awards http://bit.y/scre... - lots of great prizes, entries open until October 25 [Date extended from October 17, 2011] 1:41 - Welcome to Tom Johnson http://idratherbe...
Interview with Tom Johnson 2:01 - Tom introduces himself 2:55 - QUESTION: Visually communicating is difficult - why is it difficult for technical communicators, what makes it hard? 3:23 - If you have to translate your content, it is very difficult. 3:52 - If translations isn't a huge factor, then there is a barrier for tech communicators, like what mic, where to record, then how to build it. 4:38 - Lot of lag time between project being worked on and done, and when you could create a video. 5:00 - Technical writers come from writing background and are good with words, so they lean toward writing - but that doesn't necessarily translate to visual interface that software has. 5:43 - Even things not high quality really connects with users. 5:49 - QUESTION: Is there anything technical communicators or others can do to get better to be thinking visually and creating visually? 6:29 - First step is to believe visual products are really powerful. 6:50 - Watching users will change your mind. 7:20 - Actually seeing a user going into use help is a treat. 7:36 - People responded very to screencasts, but they didn't get the name 'screencast.' User understood what they are better when labelled 'video tutorial.' 8:09 - Why am I writing so much text if people can and want to get info from a video. 8:14 - People read when scanning for specific answers. 8:18 - To say videos fit every learning situation is a fallacy. 8:37 - New users really prefer videos as a grounding point 8:49 - First step is to believe that video has power. 8:55 - To get into it, it takes practice and some trial and error. 9:08 - Mistake to think that you have to create high quality content. 9:41 - Having a technical writer take control of the whole process seems to fit the agile software development mode. 10:09 - HOST: Seems like agile method for tech communicators works outside of software model. 10:31 - Seems a lot of technical writers struggle with voice overs 11:18 - People can improve their voice. 11:30 - HOST: Hear from users that they don't like the sound of their own voice. 11:58 - Tip 1: Use a script if doing something formal - can be more casual if not formal. Have two monitors, script on one monitor so you can fix it on the fly. 12:43 - Tip 2: Increase naturalness of audio, read the conceptual parts of the script, and then go off script for the how-to parts of the video. 13:20 - Tip 3: Dub over your own voice. Can replace parts you don't like or need to fix. 13:51 - Thanks to Tom.
Dan Nunez - Clipboard tutorial 14:27 - Introduction to Dan Nunez video 14:36 - Dan's video starts
Introduction to Coach's Eye 22:31 - Meet Brooks and Kuj - bad cop/bad cop talking about Coach's Eye from TechSmith
29:02 - Demo of Coach's Eye begins
35:00 - ScreenChomp commercial
36:35 - Screencast of the Month with Shane Lovellette
41:06 - End Credits

Anyway... I hope I explain this right...
I need SWF files - can't really go into why - SnagIt has that, but the MainMenu Maker only creates EXE files - would like to be able to publish this to pretty much any format.
so now i make the menu in menu maker, screen shot it, and then use hot tags. this could be done so much easier if i could just publish to html or to swf~ anyhow the exe format is nice but i think expanding that program would help me a TON!
thanks all - jd
