حزب البعث العربي الاشتراكي حزب تأسس في دمشق، سوريا بتاريخ 7 نيسان / أبريل 1947 تحت شعار امة عربية واحدة ذات رسالة خالدة وأهدافه وحدة حرية اشتراكية وهي تجسد الوحدة العربية والتحرر من الاستعمار والإمبريالية وإقامة النظام الاشتراكي العربي. وهو الحزب الحاكم في سوريا منذ ثورة الثامن من آذار في عام 1963 حتى الآن وكان الحزب الحاكم للعراق منذ 17 تموز / يوليو 1968 حتى سقوط نظام صدام بتاريخ 9 نيسان / أبريل 2003 في أيدي قوات التحالف.
يوصف حزب البعث على أنه مزيج من الاشتراكية، والقومية العربية. تبنى المبدأ السياسي وتعمل أيضاً على أساس الانقلاب الشعبي ضد الحاكم الظالم أو العميل أو من يواكب الاستعمار.
وقد اصطدمت هويته الوطنية والقومية مع الحكومات العربية المختلفة في أماكن وجود الحزب. ويرفع الحزب شعار "أمة عربية واحدة ذات رسالة خالدة" أما أهدافه فهي "وحدة، حرية، اشتراكية". وترمز "الوحدة" إلى اتحاد الأقطار العربية، و"الحرية" من القيود الأوروبية وتحرر الأقطار العربية منها والجدير بالذكر انه لم يطبق هذا الشعار إلا في العراق منذ صعود الحزب للحكم..
