About Me:

Matthew Kohn knew he was going to become an artist when he heared Laurie Anderson's "Big Science" on the radio in the middle of the night in 1983. Since then, he's been the lead poet in two bands backed by unknowns who are now all full time musicians. In 1995, LAKE SUCCESS, a book of poetry, was published by Soft Skull Press. The next year, he made the silent film SEA LEVEL INFERNO for drummer William Hooker and Mission of Burma's Roger Miller, which premiered at the New York Underground Film Festival. Kohn followed up with music videos for the William Hooker/Thurston Moore Duo, Pere Ubu offshoot Home and Garden, Tigers and Monkeys and most recently, Cindy Lee Berryhill's "When Did Jesus Become a Republican?" In 2000, Kohn commissioned a score by Tzadik label artist Kato Hideki for Kohn's short comedy ROSA X-RAYS JOE, featuring Drama Desk Award nominee Anita Durst. A film with only one kiss, Rosa won Best Experimental Film at SinCine 2002, an erotic film festival. His first feature documentary, which explored the Electoral College and electoral reform between the 2000 and 2004 elections, CALL IT DEMOCRACY (7th Art Releasing), premiered at the Palm Springs Film Festival in 2005, and has been seen at many other festivals and hundreds of college campuses. It is currently available for educational screenings through Cinema Guild and will be released commercially in 2008. His newest documentary work, SITE SPECIFIC: THE LEGACY OF REGIONAL MODERNISM, is a 22-minute investigation of architect Paul Rudolph and the relevance of his early sustainable designs to current green construction. The film is touring the world's best architecture firms along with Editor-in-chief Susan S. Szenasy to commemorate the Metropolis magazine's 25th Anniversary. Nearing completion is FREEDOM ISN'T FREE, a short fiction film about the Iraq war starring Alexandria Wailes. Wailes is a deaf actor who has appeared in Mother Courage as Meryl Streep's daughter, and Law and Order. In this film, she plays a nameless Iraq war vet who searches for a friend at a DC anti-war march -- but does not change her pro-war views. He is currently directing FIVE DAYS AT TONIC about the much loved, now closed, avant-garde music venue on Norfolk street, featuring interviews with Hal Wilner (curator of SNL's music for 25 years), Vernon Reid, Marc Ribot, and many other amazing New Yorkers. He has written screenplays, many of them science-fiction. Matt Kohn has BA in Politics, Film and Feminist Political Theory from Brandeis University, and was President of the Student Government.
