BGreenHVAC:
I'm using a household heater in the car to pre-heat the vehicle from wall power. You can read about that at: http://300mpg.org/projects/electro-metro/heat/
Having the motor directly connected to the transmission works fine. To slow down, I take my foot off the accelerator and gently apply it to the brake pedal. This car is using a series-wound DC motor. Those do not make especially good generators. You would pretty much have to downshift to get the motor speed up high enough to generate a charging current. You would also need a motor controller that supports regenerative braking. Mine does not. For a simple DC electric car conversion, it really isn't worth it to design regenerative brakes.

Your electric Geo Metro has inspired me. I have some questions about it. FIrst, what do you do for heat? Also, I have seen how the motor attaches directly to the transmission shaft. How does it work when braking? Is just letting off the "Go" petal plus appling brake the way you do it? If you release the "Go" petal without utilizing the brake, does the momentum of the car turn the electric motor into a generator?

Thanks

Yes, even a 4,450 lb truck can be converted to electric. But just because you CAN do something doesn't mean that you will have the best results. A heavy vehicle takes more energy to get moving, so running on battery electric power, a heavy vehicle won't have as good range as a lighter car. Compact pickups like S10s and Rangers are popular for EV conversions because they are lighter than full-size trucks, but can still carry plenty of batteries.

Is it possible to convert a 4,450 lb truck to electric?

You realy inspired me, I just have to persuade my friends to convert a bike or an old car into electro. Anyway, great work Ben, and btw you look bit like Johnny Depp

Hey Guys, when you mention "this project", ya gotta say which one! I have WAY too many projects, but they are all good fun, affordable, and eco-friendly.
On the bio-diesel truck project, I now have the Chevy transmission, the Mercedes manual tranny flywheel, a custom clutch disc, a Mercedes clutch cover, and the Mercedes engine. The next step is to put them all together and measure to see what I need to make for an adapter plate.

For the ReVolt PropEL hybrid booster pack, I am waiting on a propane regulator and solenoid to make the fuel intake for the generator work.

Recently, I have been driving the Electro-Metro more than the pickup truck. The Metro gets more trips, and the truck gets more miles.

Thank you for posting the projects. We need to shatter the Matrix that is oil consumption/empire building on our own, in our garages, and no longer wait for the corporate hive-minded suits to produce solutions. Solutions to the real truth of man taking his/her place among Earths symbiotic, co-existing creatures to promote unity and enduring peace here.
Your a true Patriot sir.
