Music & Videos from Angus & Julia Stone
About Me:
The last 3 years have been a whirlwind for brother and sister duo, Angus & Julia Stone. Their debut album A Book Like This released in 2007 glided easily into the hearts of Australians where it debuted top 10 on the national ARIA album chart and maintained a spot in the top 100 for over a year. In 2008 it earned the brother and sister duo 6 ARIA award nominations and was certified platinum, selling in excess of 80,000 copies.
The international release and critical acclaim of A Book like this through Europe, UK, USA and Japan resulted in the band spending the past two years touring the world in support of it from the cold Scottish Highlands to the warm desert towns of the USA. As well as having songs featured on TV ads from Korea to Scandinavia and appearing on Festivals throughout the world including SXSW in Texas, Edinburgh Fringe Festival and Latitude in London.
Travelling has been an integral part of the Stones musical story so its not surprising they opted to record their new album Down The Way in a number of diverse locations around the globe; an old sawmill on the river banks of Fowey in Cornwall, a studio in Brooklyn, a water tank in Coolangatta, their second home - London - and Queens in New York.
Down The Way marks their debut as producers, taking full control of their sound without losing the spirit of what made the first record so special. There has been a subtle shift of gear, represented by a growing confidence in their abilities as artists and the music follows suit as it flows easily through sparse and rich textured arrangements without losing any of its etherealness and charm.
Once again the brother and sister duo share the song writing duties on Down The Way, their individual styles compliment each other and juxtapose beautifully as they express their alternate views of lost love and yearning. This is shown especially well in the epic and rich tapestry of Hold On and the albums first single And The Boys which was co-produced by Brad Albetta (Martha Wainwright).
Elsewhere touches of piano and understated finger picking guitar light up the darkness of the sound on the track For You and Big Jet Plane sees Anguss rustic tones rolling atop a dreamy string arrangement. Draw Your Swords is a six-minute work out building to an unrestrained crescendo revealing a true passion and Devils Tears Features gentle piano and sweet acoustic guitars to beautifully close the album.
Down The Way is thirteen lovingly crafted songs reflecting a myriad of emotions and another graceful step on a remarkable musical journey for Angus & Julia Stone.
