Freedom is not free! Liberty exists only where tyranny is defeated and kept at bay. America's endeavors to bring democracy in the worst places on Earth is a just and noble cause. God bless America, democracy and those who keep it!

America is a young country yet it is also the world's oldest government and its first Republic. It proved the world that liberty and freedom were possible. When George Washington became President of the United States of America, France had a King, Germany had a Kaiser, Russia had a Tzar, and China had an Emperor. Today they all have Presidents.

I wanted to put more nuances in the previous post, but youtube kept rejecting it due to the size. Hm, i don't think that a monarchy is a fuedal thing per sé, i mean, the common perception of a king, that of an Absolute one, was centuries after the middle ages (which weren't dark) and feudalism was no longer in use as a political/economical system. There is tremendous difference between an European monarch now and then. It is very hard to weigh the importance of 1776 or any revolution, perhaps 1688 was more important ... perhaps not, at least a tremendous step against absolute power of a monarch (but nobody really followed that example). Though i'm inclined to call the US, just as you, the first liberal democracy, i think that some elements are to be found in other nations that make up a modern society, but not as you say, bundeled in one gov't. Heh, strange that the US is the embodiment of various ideas stemming from many nations, but you are quite correct.

Angel, yes my concern is that there seems to be no compromise in ideas between liberals and conservatives. Liberals come from the stand point that America is the source of all world problems, whereas conservatives stem their logic from the point that America, on the contrary, is the source of the world's solutions. The truth may be more ambivalent or a mixture of the two, but overall I think that it is factually correct to argue that America has been a positive force for humanity. This economy, this world, these inventions, this culture is based heavily on American life-style.

Mathieu, America is the first 'modern' democracy. We all know about antiquity, but since the Dark Ages America was the first nation to establish all of the ideas of the enlightenment (les lumieres as the French call it) onto its government from its very foundations. Holland, Great Britain and other European nations integrated some of these concepts onto a Monarchy, thus staying attached to the old world and steming from feudalism.

Hey i couldnt help but admire your comments on a bill o'reilly video and reading your comment below i think you and the muscician below really hit the nail on the head. We are divided obviosly between liberals and conservatives......n ow im not a very political guy being only 16 as you would think, but us conservatives need to unite more. Liberals stand for everything that america isnt how can we unite with these people

There were republics before the US. The most famous those from antiquity (e.g. Rome), but also the United Provinces (the Netherlands), and the Commonwealth of England (under Cromwell and his son). Many smaller states in Italy were republics, some lasted long some not, some even lasted till the formation of a unified Italy in 1871, then it was a monarchy.
The United States constitution was not the first constitution, some of them even predates the US constitution by millenia,. The Magna Carta is pretty much a symbol of a constitution, the Founding Father got their inspiration from it. The Swedish constitution predates the US constitution by 17 years, or at least when the US one was ratified. The influence of English law ways heavy on the US constitution as is the form of gov't of the United Provinces. There were thousands upon thousands of gov't before the US, stable ones that held out for centuries.

Oh, and Germany didn't exist yet in 1789, it came into being in 1871 after the Franco-Prussian war ... only then it became the German Reich. Maybe you thought of the Holy Roman Empire?

Just to add to your point the libderals are also the antithesis of the civil rights movement! So i agree with you on that even with my limited knowledge of American politics!
