Qantas lands its first 747-400 at tiny Illawarra airport
http://blogs.crikey.com.au/planetalking/2015/03/08/qantas...Thousands of people watched in awe this morning when the first Qantas 747-400, VH-OJA, turned slowly over the Illawarra escarpment and descended for a flawless landing at the tiny Albion Park aerodrome south of Wollongong.
It had taken but nine or so minutes for the jumbo jet to make the trip south from Sydney Airport. If it seemed to be moving slowly as it approached, it really was. OJA, named the City of Canberra , approached the northern end of the 1819 metres short runway at 132 knots, much less than a normally loaded and operational approach speed of 180 knots, and touched down on tyres pumped ‘down’ to 120 pounds per square inch rather than a more usual 208 psi.
