Your channel has single handedly dropped my after-work-hours productivity for last week to absolute zero. My room is a mess, my laundry is pending and today I ran out of clothes to wear. I'm officially declaring my love-hate for you guys. Kisses to you both. Take it.
+S Anwar Ahmed Yeah, I still wish I could watch 10-20 episodes a day, but I'm running out... c'mon JBU chop chop, whip crack etc.
Oh right, maybe if I donate moneys, ya? Okay then!
are the two in the same boat +S Anwar Ahmed . I did my college teacher start watching the videos in class w me at surgical clinic, now both during practical classes we comment the videos and the rest of the room have no idea of our laughter!
Gaby was very candid in a few articles I read speaking about her experience with BuzzFeed and the struggle it has been since creating her own channel to grow and have the funds to run JBU. I always hoped, ever since I saw Gaby and Allison on BuzzFeed, that I would see a lot more of them and was always excited to see their faces on a YouTube video. The fact that her content is still up after Gaby and Allison have left and that the profits from those videos will never belong to to either one of these lovely ladies saddens me very much. I support their endeavors whether this means JBU or whatever Gallison, LLC creates in the future. As someone who has been watching BuzzFeed wishing and waiting for these ladies to have their own Tv show or cameos in other shows I was so heartbroken to realize that BuzzFeed forced a loyalty upon Gaby and Allison that hurt their chances at greater fame. Gaby and Allison no matter what the idiot viewer says about sponsorship and what hardships there may be along the way know that your freedom is more important than anything else. Show me, show BuzzFeed and Allison's parents that you CAN make it on your own. I don't know you and I've never met you. But as your loyal fan, I love you and your content very much. Thank you
Thanks for ruining my life! Well, a day of it anyhow.
There I was, finishing the first episode in a new PBS Digital channel about advanced math called "Infinite Series", when in the YouTube side panel I noticed a vlogbrothers video that looked out of place: It was two women instead of they guys I normally see on that channel.
Well, that's odd. Checked it out, but it was about BuzzFeed, or not about BuzzFeed, or life after BuzzFeed, or something. But, what the hell, they seemed witty, so I checked out their channel.
Watched. Every. Video. Lost a part of my life I'll never get back.
Why did I do this? WHY?!?!? I burned out on YouTube comedy over a decade ago. Including neurotic JAPs and voracious omnisexuals.
Though not together, not at the same-Bat-time, on the same Bat-channel.
Somehow this works, but not for any of the traditional "let's watch cute girls be goofy" reasons. Well, OK, those reasons DO still work for this vanilla male, but they're not enough when there's a bazillion other channels out there filled with cute goofy funny girls (I'm looking at you, Grace Helbig and Hanna Hart).
OK, I'm an engineer: I can figure out what makes these two different. Clearly, I'm going to have to science the shit out of it. But even after taking away the scatological humor, there's still something left, several somethings.
First, Allison and Gaby have distinct comedy styles, but they clearly work hard to be complementary rather than competitive. This means I rarely know where a sketch or conversation is going until it happens. It's not just random or unpredictable comedy, but is rather comedy that often has a hidden agenda, delivered without telegraphing the plot or punch line.
Beyond their comedy styles, their performance talents differ. To me, Allison seems more like an actor who does comedy, while Gaby seems like a comedian who acts. For example, when an ad-lib goes in an unexpected direction, Allison generally stays in character, while Gaby busts up (which is **way** beyond contagious, especially when Allison gives Gaby either The Smirk or The Look).
So, yes, they absolutely do fulfill the "Odd Couple" stereotype. But lots of folks making YouTube comedy share these and other related traits. What's different or special here?
Well, they do go to "Those Awkward Places" often enough. And they tend to dwell there just long enough to make me squirm. Making it a relief in more than the comedy sense when they move on. Well played!
But there's more, beyond or behind the ha-ha and awkward.
I think it's pain. Those precious moments when you're surfing at the edge of tears. My favorite Carlin and Pryor bits live there. When Gaby and Allison go there, I have no idea if they are working from life or imagination or both. And I don't need to know, because the content hits me as genuine, and that's where it takes me.
I've tried hard to find light ways to communicate the truth of my "issues", and I believe comedy is a great way to go, but mine always falls completely flat. Allison and Gaby seem to be able to explore the space in a way that feels real without getting maudlin.
Self-deprecating without being self-destructive. A very fine line when it comes to getting a laugh from personal "issues".
I SO want to learn how they do it!
+Gaby Dunce Your chemistry together is amazing, her quirky worrying behavior is so endearing (lol I'm sorry you didn't get the kiss you expected). And your Devil may care attitude makes you guys so adorable. Keep the vids coming!!
Ok, who is more ticklish Allison or Gaby? My vote is for Allison. Gaby might be more ticklish on her feet though. Conjecture purely based on personalities seen on internet videos. Anyone else wanna make a guess?
So I watched If Geek Girls Acted Like Geek Guys and I really enjoyed it. Then later in the week, I'm like, "That was really funny. I think I'll watch it again." Then I watch the other two similar videos. Then again later in the week, I'm like, "Man, I think I'll watch that video again. Wow, that woman is really funny and cute. Who is she?" Then I proceed to watch several Buzzfeed videos featuring Gaby and now I'm here subscribed and enjoying the interplay between you two.
The James Deen video was the best.
Question for Gaby and Allison : Would you consider going mainstream on a major network if presented with the opportunity. You may have to change the format to fit a half hour time slot. I think you guys have a great thing going with this program. I'm hooked :). Allison, if they ever do a Bayonetta movie, you should audition for the part.
