Just found your channel and I was blown away! You are easily the best non Jamaican reggae style drummer I have seen (and I've seen some really good ones!). The album This Is ..... Augustus Pablo and the movie Rockers have gotten me heavily into reggae drums and I have been trying to find a good example of the style on u tube and there's not that many that show a good visual and good mix but your videos are perfect! If I may can I make a request for Horsemouth Wallace on Burning spears song Invasion. I like his style on that one; very heavy snare hits and good use of toms! Thanx very much for being such a dedicated and thorough drummer!

Man...i watched many so called "reggae drums lessons" on tube, but I cal tell you, you are the only one who knows how to play "one -drop" like Carly (and his nephew Aston jr). I'm a bass player and my role model is Familyman. I'm glad that your uploading songs without sound, so I can play with you :) Kepp on uploading!!!

The heathen, brilliant HI HAT work, "top notch" off the scale dude..your bass drum is KICK ass ,love the way you play it on the off, throwing in double kicks sometimes along with the cross stick in and out..very hard thing to get right man..alot of work in this song..sounds cool with the music in the backround..just nice mix there.Great to see carlys style put down, not many people around, that can do his style RIGHT, and showing, that you do not have to be JAMAICAN to play like the king..respect to you, and to all reggae fans who appreciate this, nice exehibition of fine reggae drumming!!..

Thanks for the comments dude, the snare is a 1968 Ludwig Supraphonic 400, 14x5 , and in the studio depending on how its tuned, it sounds exactly like an early 70's reggae recording. The rest of the set is a ludwig 3-ply from around 72-73, and i haven't made it into the studio to hear it, but it sounds good in the shitty little room im practicing in, so i have high hopes for the studio. Iv been picking apart Carlton Barrett's beats for about 10 years, but lost my drum set in hurricane Katrina and havent had a drum set since then until this year. If you like Carly's stuff you should check out Lloyd "tin leg" Adams. He played with the Upsetters and Augustus Pablo, and since there was not a lot of singing going on he could improvise a lot more than Carly could with Bob. Check out "Please Sunrise" on youtube by Augustus Pablo to get an idea, very similar to CB but a lot more jazzy cause no singer.
