Typhoon Haiyan was downgraded to a Category One as it approached the coast of north Vietnam where it made landfall early on Monday morning.
Expecting the worst on Sunday, some 600,000 people were evacuated from central regions to safe zones but as the Typhoon changed direction northwards that evacuation
order had to be extended.
Although carrying nothing like the wind speeds that wreaked havoc in the Philippines, it still hit Vietnam's Do Son beach resort with gusts of up to 155 kilometres-per-hour.
Along with the strong winds, warnings of potential storm surges of up to seven metres meant much of the coastline was put on high alert.
So far four people have been reported dead - they died while trying to reinforce their homes before the Typhoon struck.
Away from the coast heavy rain fall is threatening to cause flash flooding in and around the river systems in Vietnam's northern highlands.
