Fatima Al Qadiri - Ghost Raid - Art + Music - MOCAtv x Fade to Mind #1
by MOCATV 60,819 views
Fatima Al Qadiri's "Desert Strike" Out Now on Fade to Mind www.fadetomind.net
Inspired by the blend of technology and destruction in Fatima Al Qadiri's EP Desert Strike, artist Alex Gvojic's lush visualization of Ghost Raid is a blend of real war footage, video games, and original computer animation. Drawing upon the background of the Gulf War and ancient myths of Djinn, the film documents the creation of secret machines in unseen dimensions, black particles rising like smoke from oil fires, evil energies drawn
from conflict and war. Working alongside otherwordly entities, the Djinn are the spirit of military technology, ghostly machines crafting conflict, much like a child outfitting a soldier in a video game. Ghost Raid is a hyperreal meditation on history, spirituality, and contemporary violence.

SAMO© - Jean-Michel Basquiat - N.A.S.A. + Kool Kojak + Money Mark + Fab Five Freddy - Art + Music
by MOCATV 168,147 views
For this film, rather than making a direct homage to Basquiat's work, the filmmakers decided instead to try to re-create the world, which spawned SAMO. N.A.S.A. Is a DJ duo featuring Brazilian DJ, Ze Gonzales (aka DJ Zegon) and music producer Sam Spiegel (aka Squeak E. Clean), who are known for their collaborations with Kanye West, MIA, Santigold, David Byrne, Karen O and more. The duo came together with Brazilian-American producer Kool Kojak and musician/producer Money Mark to collaborate on the track that also features legendary New York impresario Fab Five Freddy, who was recruited to do spoken word. A search for archival footage of New York from the era was undergone, then coupled with organic elements to add a sense of hand-made to the film. Animator Maya Erdelyi painstakingly painted and scratched hundreds of feet of vintage 16mm stock, which has been used as a visual bed for the film. Erdelyi and artist Alexis Ross did the SAMO/Fab Five Freddy texts and lettering by hand. Aaron Rose and filmmaker/animator Thomas McMahan then assembled of the final piece together in the edit.

The Game On Art (Pt. 1) - Art + Music - MOCAtv
by MOCATV 4,106 views
In the first of a series of films from The Game on Art, rap superstar The Game visits the Agathe Snow solo art show at OHWOW.
After selling millions of albums, being nominated for Grammys, delivering scene-stealing performances in major motion pictures and starring in a hit television program, it may seem like there isn't much to do for an artist. But The Game decided to reach deep into his creative reservoir and deliver the strongest album of his already remarkable career. The conceptually rich, sonically robust and star-studded 'Jesus Piece' is the Compton rapper's fifth studio release, yet it finds The Game achieving heightened levels of artistry.
Even before The Game released his first studio album, he has been among the most revered artists in rap. Signed to Dr. Dre in the early 2000s, The Game exploded on the music scene in 2004 as the most dynamic member of 50 Cent's G-Unit collective. With the release of The Game's debut album, 2005's blockbuster The Documentary, the rapper became the first platinum artist to emerge from the West Coast in several years. the streets. His third album, 2008's LAX, solidified his status as one of rap's premier artists, while his next album, 2011's The R.E.D. Album, became his third album to hit No. 1 on the Billboard 200.

Psychic Data, Atmospheric Noise - Art + Music - MOCAtv
by MOCATV 2,763 views
'Psychic Data, Atmospheric Noise' is an audio/visual ode to the present state of the shift in Universal consciousness. It is a fragment of a life that has been pushed to the fringes of science.....the melding of man and nature in the theater of waking dreams. The images and sounds are inspired by Random Number Generators, Remote Healing techniques, theories of the Noosphere, 'JLG/JLG', and 'Timepiece' by Jim Henson.
The sound in the film does not focus on "song" in the musical sense, but rather on the juxtaposition of sound and image and the power of brevity, silence, and space. The sounds consist mainly of field recordings from the town of Woodstock along with sound effects and fragments of ambience i recorded in my studio.
Directed, Filmed, and Edited by Brian DeGraw.
Starring Tony Cox, BDG ,and Fffffrog.
Assisted by Michael James Fox.

Wangechi Mutu + Santigold - The End of eating Everything - Nasher Museum at Duke
by MOCATV 20,192 views
"The End of eating Everything" is an excerpt of artist Wangechi Mutu's first animated video, created in collaboration with recording artist Santigold and co-released by the Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University and MOCAtv on YouTube.
The 8-minute video, "The End of eating Everything," marks the journey of a flying, planet-like creature navigating a bleak skyscape. This "sick planet" creature is lost in a polluted atmosphere, without grounding or roots, led by hunger towards its own destruction. The animation's audio, also created by Mutu, fuses industrial and organic sounds.
"The End of eating Everything" was commissioned by the Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University as part of the new exhibition "Wangechi Mutu: A Fantastic Journey," the first survey in the United States for this internationally renowned, multidisciplinary artist, and her most comprehensive and innovative show yet. Mirror Mirror - "Sublime Objective" - Art + Music - MOCAtv
by MOCATV 3,188 views
Director Tom Kalin, uses the elegant dynamism of parkour as a motif for aspiration in Mirror Mirror's Sublime Objective music video. The lyrics speak to striving for a goal, while the music suggests a transcendent state: a relationship that Kalin explores with the use of Shaker-inspired movement, bubbles, and imagery of rainbows and light halos. The Making Of "Sublime Objective" - Art + Music - MOCAtv
by MOCATV 1,279 views
Go behind the scenes of the Sublime Objective music video with director Tom Kalin, band Mirror Mirror, and parkour athlete Jose "Vert" Jimenez. Mirror Mirror chose Jimenez to run in the video because of Sublime Objective's themes of ascent and aspiration. In Jimenez's words, "parkour or free running is moving with efficiency and constant momentum," a quality that Kalin juxtaposes with the weightlessness and fragility of bubbles. Other details, like light halos and lens flares, complement the theme of ecstatic and transcendent physical movement. Kalin's use of pseudo-religious, Shaker-inspired movement also references a scene from the 1929 silent film Diary of a Lost Girl, in which actress Louise Brooks is shaken in a way that suggests both violence and sensuality. With both parkour and ecstatic movement at play, physical and spiritual experience become intertwined in Sublime Objective. Watch the complete music video here: link to video

Learn To Say F**k You / Sol LeWitt - Tim Armstrong (Rancid) - Art + Music - MOCAtv
by MOCATV 29,963 views
In 1965, Sol LeWitt wrote fellow sculptor Eva Hesse a four-page letter of encouragement, urging her to stop doubting herself and to simply continue making her work. Despite the fact that some would consider their friendship unlikely, the two sculptors were close friends and wrote to each other frequently about their ideas, work, and personal lives from 1960 until Hesse's death ten years later. Often quoted, LeWitt's letter has become a source of inspiration and a vote of confidence for many artists the world over.
Producer Aaron Rose (Beautiful Losers, Become a Microscope) worked with punk rock band Rancid to remake LeWitt's words into a bold and boisterous song. With wild and wavy LeWitt-inspired animation, this video energetically embodies the message of its writer.
Read the original letter in full: http://blog.art21.org/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/sol-eva-letter.pdf
In keeping with our tradition of unlikely bedfellows this is our latest film in the Lyric Video series. This project started with Tim Armstrong taking the text, and reconfiguring it into a formal song structure with verses, bridges and a chorus. He then put together a group of his talented musician friends and let it rip in the studio. Once the song was done, Filmmaker Aaron Rose researched specific works of LeWitt's that would animate well and passed them off to animator/director Thomas McMahan to set them in motion. The end result is a lyric video like none other. A true testament to the brilliance of Sol LeWitt, sent through a 21st Century filter to create something that resonates as strongly today as the original works did when they were created.

Additional Animators: Thomas McMahan, Aaron Bjork, Eugene Goryachev, Dave Drage
Music: Tim Armstrong

The filmmakers Bryan Ray Turcotte and Bo Bushnell take a unique approach to exploring the rich histories of these three seminal punk legends by focusing on the influential imagery and seeking out stories that have not been told yet through the artwork, which is integral to the importance and influence of each band.
On June 11, 2013 The Art Of Punk debuts on MOCAtv with an episode on Raymond Pettibon and the artwork of Black Flag. The stories behind the art of Crass will debut on June 18, and June 25 will see the release of the Dead Kennedys episode, all of which will be available at: www.youtube.com/MOCAtv

Tracey Emin/Harper Simon - FoxKin - Art + Music - MOCAtv
by MOCATV 1,914 views
FoxKin, a short film directed by Tracey Emin set to her friend and collaborator Harper Simon's "Eternal Questions," from his second album Division Street, tracks the movements of a fox lurking around a porch, at odds with the human environment. The creature is cautious, utterly aware though ultimately indifferent to its being watched. Yet before we can project, empathize, or understand, Emin's camera takes on the momentums and invasiveness of the paparazzi -- a finger invariably in the shot. "Are eternal questions not worth knowing?" Harper asks. At question here is the queer ecology of belonging.
Video by Tracey Emin. Music by Harper Simon.

The Art of Punk - Black Flag - Art + Music - MOCAtv
by MOCATV 72,305 views
On the first episode of "The Art of Punk" we dissect the art of the legendary Black Flag. From the iconic four bars symbols, to the many coveted and collected gig flyers, singles, and band t-shirts, all depicting the distinctive Indian ink drawn image and text by artist Raymond Pettibon. We start off in Los Angeles talking to two founding members singer Keith Morris, and bass player Chuck Dukowski, about what the scene was like in 1976 - setting the stage for the band's formation, as well as the bands name, and the creation of the iconic four bars symbol. Raymond Pettibon talks with us from his New York art studio. Back in LA we meet with Flea, from the Red Hot Chili Peppers, about how the art, the music, and that early LA scene impacted his own life and career. To wrap it all up we sit and talk at length, with Henry Rollins, at MOCA Grand Ave in Los Angeles, about all of the above and more.

The Art Of Punk - Crass - The Art of Dave King and Gee Vaucher - Art + Music - MOCAtv
by MOCATV 8,295 views
On the next installment of The Art of Punk, we tear into the art of Crass. From the assaulting black and white photo-realistic paintings of protest, anarchy, and social satire, to their legendary adopted brand and two headed snake and cross symbol. We head up to the Anarchist Book Fair in San Francisco to meet up with Gee Vaucher, and founding Crass member, writer, and activist, Penny Rimbaud. We discuss the art and the lifestyle stemming from the infamous Dial House, where they have lived, worked, and crated their own brand of anarchistic beauty, for more than 3 decades. We have a sit down with artist Scott Campbell, at his own New York tattoo shop, and talk about how the art of Crass, and one single t-shirt created a fork in his own road of life. Owen Thornton talks some shit. Finally we hang out with British graphic designer Dave King - the creator of the infamous snake and cross symbol, and discuss post war England, hippies, punk, graphic design, and more, that led him to the creation of the symbol made legend by Crass.
