This week, the hotly-anticipated (maybe?) Xbox 360 version of Minecraft is released for XBLA. Although it's a genuinely good port of a genuinely great game, I'm having trouble figuring out who exactly would buy this over the PC version which is, objectively, a more comprehensive experience. In spite of this, I'm still finding myself re-addicted to smackin' and placin' cubes of various sorts all over again.

Let's Look At - SpyParty [PC]

SpyParty has been one of my most anticipated games for well over a year now and I finally got an invite to the paid beta so I can show it off a little bit. Basically, it's a two-player game where one player plays the part of a spy at a high-class party, discreetly accomplishing certain objectives while the second player (the sniper) looks in through the window and tries to determine which of the partygoers is the human-controlled player.

It's still very, very much a work-in-progress but there's a lot of potential here for this to be a truly great and unique multiplayer experience. I hope to check back in on the game (with videos) periodically to keep up with its development and showcase my hopefully growing skills...because right now I'm more Gold Bond than James Bond.

Let's Look At - Awesomenauts [XBLA/PSN]

Awesomenauts is, to simplify things a little bit, a side-scrolling 2D MOBA/Action RTS. You play as one of a variety of classes whose job it is to kill robots, destroy enemy towers, and eventually blow up the enemy's enormous space drill. It's not nearly as deep or nuanced as the popular MOBAs on PC right now, but that's honestly kind of why I like it!

Awesomenauts is easy to learn and fun to play, definitely worth picking up at 800 points if you've got friends to play with!

Let's Look At - Toy Soldiers - [PC/XBLA]

Toy Soldiers finally came out on Steam last week after being available for more than 2 years on XBLA. It's a tower defense game that's unique for two reasons: its World War I setting/aesthetic, and the ability to actually exert direct control over your towers and units.

It's pretty fun, and certainly well-made, but it's not quite exciting enough to make me forget about my genre fatigue for tower defense games. That being said, genre diehards should find this to be a nice change of pace and a more active, hands-on type of TD.

Let's Look At - The Walking Dead: Episode 1 [PC/PSN/XBLA]

Telltale's adventure game based on The Walking Dead came out last week, and to be honest I was really surprised to find that I greatly enjoyed it. It's not for everyone -- definitely more of an "interactive narrative" than a game, so to speak. That being said, the situations are tense and interesting, and the (difficult) choices you make in the game carry some weight as they alter the course of your story.

Still waiting on the next episodes, but this is an encouraging start that people would do well to check out!

Let's Look At - Sniper Elite V2 [PC/Xbox/PS3]

Sniper Elite V2 is a (mostly) stealth-based third-person shooter set in the closing days of World War II. As Red Army and Allied forces close in on Berlin, it's your job to assassinate prominent Nazi rocket scientists before they can fall into Soviet hands and potentially give them a leg up in the proceeding Cold War.

Overall, the game is solid but it isn't really an authentic sniper experience. You don't really need too much strategy or forethought for most engagements, and there's a lot of close-quarters combat in addition to long range sniping. It's still neat, it just reminds me more of a Medal of Honor game than a sniping experience.

Most people probably won't find $50 worth of content here, but for diehard fans of games like this, there's enough here to avoid buyer's remorse at the very least.

Well, April saw the release of Fez and Trials: Evolution on Xbox Live Arcade, now it's time to balance that goodness out with some serious badness. Bloodforge is a character-action game very similar (cough) to God of War. Most of the time it's unremarkable -- the rest of the time, the camera (possibly one of the worst I've ever seen) is nausea-inducing and the lead character's Christian Bale impression gets on my nerves. Overall, there's much better games to spend your money on right now.

It's beautiful, has amazing music and sound, and overall is a refreshing change of pace even for someone like myself who isn't normally fond of adventure games like this. The game is competent, but its complexity and lack of intuitiveness really hold this back from being a truly addictive puzzle experience. Overall, I think either Critical Mass or SpaceChem is probably a better purchase depending on where your puzzle preferences are.

UPDATE: I've since played Lume for a bit longer and I have to add that the game is very short. It took me about 2 hours to complete the entire thing. This is not necessarily unusual for an episodic adventure game like this, but it's worth noting! I still recommended it heavily because of how beautiful it is and how interesting the puzzles are.

Simply put, Lume is the most beautiful game I've played this year. Fans of the point-and-click adventure genre are doing themselves a disservice if they don't pick this up.

Apart from that, it also switches things up by allowing you to choose whether to be the defender (traditional tower defense gameplay) or the attacker, who spawns units to try to get past the AI's defenses.

These changes do a fair amount to spice up a tired genre, but I think the game's $20 price tag makes this a tough sell for all but the biggest tower defense fans out there.

A Virus Named Tom is a nifty little upcoming puzzler that manages to be fun despite not really breaking any new ground. The highlight for me so far has definitely been the cutscenes. Although the story is somewhat shoehorned in and not totally meaningful for the gameplay, they're genuinely funny and I dig the Jetsons-gone-wrong aesthetic. Anyway, this is a decent buy for puzzle fans at five or ten bucks are long as you're not expecting a reinvention of the wheel.
