Mortar lands behind child as she sings after rally

Dramatic footage was shared by many Syrian activist accounts early on February 6 which claims to show a dramatic incident that took place in Bustan al-Qasr, Aleppo, on November 16, 2012. It shows a young girl singing in front of the camera when what is described as a mortar shell explodes behind her as she is performing. It appears from the footage that the girl survives. Meanwhile, activists reported a large fire in Jobar in north-east Damascus which appears to have been caused by random shelling. The shelling began after insurgents attacked a checkpoint at the Harmala bin al Waleed Mosque, a few kilometers away.

Mourners and police clashed in Cairo on February 4 after the funeral of two activists whose deaths have been blamed on the security forces. Popular activist Mohammed Al-Jundi was arrested during a protest near Tahrir Square on January 27 and died from a brain injury on February 4. Omar Saad was shot in the throat on February 1 during a protest and died on February 3, according to local reports. Footage taken on February 4 shows mourners participating in a funeral procession, then later running from police and tear gas.

PAME union protests arrests of members in Athens

Hundreds of members of the communist PAME union gathered on January 31 in Athens to stand in solidarity with members who were arrested the previous day after occupying the office of labour minister Yannis Vroutsis. Around 300 activists occupied Vroutsis' office in an anti-austerity protest and were dispersed by police using tear gas, according to reports. South Korea celebrates successful rocket launch

South Korea launched the Naro-1 rocket from a pad in the southwestern coastal village of Goheung on January 30, announcing that they had successfully placed a satellite in orbit for the first time. It was the third satellite launch attempt for the nation and citizens across the country were anxious that it go to plan, as it comes a month after the successful launch of a North Korean rocket. Previous attempts by South Korea in 2009 and 2010 failed to launch and last-minute technical problems forced two recent efforts in October and November to be aborted. The successful launch comes at a time of heightened strain in the Korean peninsula, as it comes a week after North Korea announced that it would conduct a new nuclear test and carry out more rocket launches.
