Classic Disney animation meets contemporary urban chaos when a frightened princess is banished from her magical animated homeland to modern-day New York City in a romantic comedy penned by Bill Kelly (Blast from the Past), directed by Kevin Lima (Tarzan), and featuring music by composer Alan Menken and lyricist Stephen Schwartz. Princess Giselle (Amy Adams) lives in the blissful cartoon world of Andalasia, where magical beings frolic freely and musical interludes punctuate every interaction. Though Princess Giselle is currently engaged to be married to the handsome Prince Edward (James Marsden), her fate takes a turn for the worse when the villainous Queen Narissa (Susan Sarandon) banishes her to the unforgiving metropolis of New York City. As the cruelty of the big city soon begins to wear down the fairy-tale exterior of the once-carefree princess, the frightened Giselle soon finds herself falling for a friendly but flawed divorce lawyer (Patrick Dempsey) whose kind compassion helps her to survive in this strange and dangerous new world.

  1. Positive review
Christopher Orr, New Republic Though the film is full of allusions to the Disney canon, they are generally unobtrusive echoes rather than eager satires. This is a children's movie at which adults are also welcome, not a cartoon for grownups. Full review External link
  2. Positive review
David Gritten, Daily Telegraph A triumphant return to form. Full review External link
  3. Negative review
Peter Bradshaw, Guardian [UK] Overhyped family movie covered in a cellophane shrink-wrap of corporate Disney plastic-ness. Full review External link
  4. Positive review
James Christopher, Times [UK] Susan Sarandon is terrific as the Evil Queen; Timothy Spall pops up like a well-used wart; and James Marsden is the terrifically thick and handsome Prince. Full review External link
  5. Positive review
Saxon Bullock, Film4 It's not quite as enchanted or magical as it could have been, but this family romp still manages to be good fun, and is lifted by fantastic turns from Amy Adams and James Marsden. Full review External link
  6. Positive review
Urban Cinefile Critics, Urban Cinefile A charming family-friendly film complete with a beautiful music score. Full review External link
  7. Positive review
Derek Adams, Time Out It's only when the story hits the streets of NYC and Adams starts hamming it up (much like Julie Hagerty did in 'Airplane') that we start seeing the fruits of a grand Mickey-take. Full review External link
  8. Positive review
Neil Smith, BBC For the most part this is a perky delight that takes a cheeky glee in biting the gloved hand that feeds. Full review External link
  9. Positive review
Olly Richards, Empire Magazine The dedicated fairy tale fan will have tons of fun spotting all the references. Adams, meanwhile, gives one of the comedy performances of the year. Full review External link
