more
Now, I'm not a huge fan of gospel music. When I say that, I don't mean "gospel" as an umbrella term for Christian music. I mean it as a more specific genre of music that usually incorporates choirs and organs. That particular type of "gospel" I don't really care for. But considering I'm a huge Philip Bailey fan, I just LOVE this song. And it doesn't hurt that he has the wonderful pipes of Deneice Williams provided backup for him (I just love her song "Free"). This isn't one of those hyper, modernized type of gospel songs like in the vein of Fred Hammond or Kirk Franklin. If you like those type of songs, don't expect that here.
This song is pretty much self-explanatory. There's nothing too profound here, just Philip stating how God brought him out of low places and how he can do the same for you. It's a very touching song. If you don't own Wonders of His Love, every single song from it is fantastic. It's out-of-print, so I'm posting the entire album so that you guys can at least hear them online.

THIS SONG is my favorite gospel song of all-time. "I Am Gold"
more
THIS SONG is my favorite gospel song of all-time. "I Am Gold" is hands-down the greatest song Philip Bailey has ever blessed with his vocals, and I'm including everything that he's recorded with Earth, Wind & Fire. So that's saying a lot. I can't believe I actually get to upload this song after all these years. And you guys finally get to hear what I've been hearing all of these years.
This song encourages you to keep going through life's trials and tribulation. Much like gold doesn't burn in fire, our faith in God should also not burn. Bailey exclaims that he's "not ashamed to stand and testify". That doesn't hold true with most of us. We'd rather not put any stock in God, or if we do... we'd rather not tout it. But we're all supposed to be living testimonies of God, and may the Lord help those that aren't strive to be.
Stylistically, this song sounds like Earth, Wind & Fire... but it doesn't. There's something there that makes it swing that has nothing to do with EWF. What that something is could be that there is a fervent passion for God within the music... or could be something else. I just know the handful of songs on Wonders of His Love swing like nothing else I've ever heard. The back and forth between Bailey's ranges, the vigorous strings, the female harmonies, the latinesque rhythm... it's crazy. I'll just let you hear it for yourself if you don't quite get what I'm saying...

This is from a show called "The Disco Top 10" from the late 90s, EW&F was voted no 6. As we know they were much more than that! (In fact they did only 2 disco tracks! "Boogie Wonderland" &" Let's Groove") Phil Bailey & Nile Rodgers are interviewed.
